don quijotes worst nightmare
It was for an workshop with Florian Satzinger at the University of applied science in Salzburg.
There is an mad scientist who lives in the windmill, and tries to awake his best friend, a dead fly.

It was for an short 2D animation, but the course ran out of time, unfortunately it was never concepted that we can finish it. So instead we did something on our own:

A short animation from Constantin, Jakob, Benno and me. I drew everything, benno and Stan made most of the animation, and Jakob some after effects. Benno did most of the post production too! It was some funny 3 days, and it was great the folks asked me to help!

RAUMRAEUBER
Raumraeuber was a project we (Alex Zimmermann and me) did in 2009.
It was my first characterdesign that was later built in an 3D programm (maya).
At first we defined the environment and world to have some rules we can stick too.
If you wouldn't do that you couldn't say if form and concepts make sense. We imagined how somebody would be in this world. How is his life, what is he doing, what does he need, but everything in the context of our own understanding of that world.
I could have drawn an engineer too, but this guys are intergalactic scavengers! There is nothing nice about them.
First I thougt over clothes and armor. The thick shape and mix of old and wasted modern parts fitted very well.
Alex was more into some additional gear for protection. But like Ted Backman said, metallic armory is something antic. Modern materials are way more effectiv. And the different layers cover a wide arrange of protection, and keep the warrior mobile.The life support system was placed on the back, some ideas played with a front installment, but it seemed immobilizing.
While we discussed the different pros and cons of armor and clothes we started with inventing the weapons, to get new arguments.They use meleeweapons and close combat, because of the easy breachable hulls from the ships. And they dont have many ressources in space and any energy is used for more important systems, so they invented new ways to kill each other. For example an air-pressure-shrapnell-gun. The head design was another challenge. My personel favorite was to show a face and some skin, but our level of skill at that time favored more the gasmask solution. Now is the mask not the best choice, because it is exhausted (even when it works) but its destroing somehow the impression of an astronaut. Anyway we found a good look, next to the hellghast, combine and the rest of the faceless footsoldiers.
the final mood for the presentation of the product. I got some impressions from early russian propaganda and retro-futuristic-design. The colors are reduced, to a minimum of colored light. Dark, dirty, bloody and strange.Thats an poster which shows the designprocess. It's 100x100 cm big, looks cool in real

I really like it, even when I'm missing some shadows. I tried some variations, with night, and artificial lights and some cold, poisonous moonlight too …hm, what happend to that idea?

how I paint a Ranger
I added a little bit fog in the background, to make a more misty mood, but theres too less volume in the upper part of the picture. I tried to help a little bit with some clouds, in the foreground.
I watched at these picture for the last months, and there are many things now that I would do much different.
At that time it was for me more about the guy, the gun, and the project. How should I paint? To learn the process of painting on my own helped me very much.

the trees are not the best, my reference was a forest at my hometown, which was like a dried out Swamp. After 1 hour in it, I was biten by more than 60 mosquitos. It did a big impact on me (60 small impacts). Very cool
first the camo, I used the new pattern from the US-military as colorreference. My brushstroke was not very well

he has his own heart in an cage, but not the right key. the metalbelt shows that he is a blind, raging puppet master. the horns are his self given crown… I've done a lot of effort in the character, but it should still look like a real ugly and filthy demon.thats the original drawing, it was a very funny night. To draw it, most people said that I shouldn't show the penis too much. But I think its one of the important parts of a devil. He's the seducer and corrupter! People also don't saw the scar. There might be too less attention in the final picture!
It's one of my favorites first wacom. Even when I used the conceptart from diablo 3, by phroi for color, and reference.

the picture is "little red cap" in the mood of artificiel light, and was given on the flyer.
the concept from loge, the act, was that it should be 4 different musicstyles for each animal.

but the budget allowed just the humantall posters that you see below, and some others from simon, a colleague/friend of mine. Which had drawn the 7 goats.
It is one of the best projects i've done. the evening was great, also well visited. You can't pay working with friends on a cool project! (even when I was payed, hehe)
